From Rheinbrohl to the Saalburg: For the first time an international travel group hiked in the footsteps of the Romans along the entire Limes section in Rhineland-Palatinate down to neighboring Hessen. The week-long tour was organized by the British-American travel agency “Andante Travels”. The two organizers of the trip, Simon Ashley and Dr. Mike Bishop, had explored the route last year. Now they returned with a 20-person tour group of participants from England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the USA.
At the Limes Tower in Hillscheid, the team of LIMES-Mobile had the opportunity to present the app to the guests and to report on the activities of the EU action. After a brief introductory lecture, the guests were able to test the different technical solutions of LIMES-Mobile including the augmented reality visualization of a watchtower, the “Museological Concept” for the Limes Tower in Hillscheid and, of course, the native app itself.
The visit is a clear sign for the Limes region in Rhineland-Palatinate: The Limes is an attractive cultural-tourism destination – and not only for day-trippers. Even internationally, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is becoming increasingly popular. The travel agency Andante Travels will offer a week-long tour on the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes again in 2015 – the tour package can be booked already on the corresponding website. And even more: The two organizers expressed their significant interest in extending their tours to the Bulgarian part of the ancient Roman border fortifications.
